Carter, Vicksburg Class of 2020. Kalamazoo Michigan Senior Photographer, Elyse Rowland.

Happy Wednesday, friends!

I thought I’d start the day with a little blog post to share a recent senior session in Vicksburg, my hometown and where our family has chosen to stay. We adore this small town, and any time I get the chance to photograph a senior here, I jump at the opportunity. I love searching for hidden little nooks & crannies around town with pops of color, texture, and line. And this time, I learned a new spot thanks to Carter! Plus, isn’t our new football stadium gorgeous?! It’s come a long way since my day…

Carter, wishing you all the best in your last year of high school — a year of many lasts, yet teetering on the brink of new beginnings. Cheers to Vicksburg Class of 2020!

Hope you enjoyed this little sneak peek!

My fall 2019 schedule is booked, however, I’m already getting inquiries about 2021 Seniors (to be photographed in 2020), so now is the best time to start considering when you’d like your senior photos! I’ll be opening my schedule sometime in January, & spots are first come, first serve. I can’t wait to hear from you!

WMU Masters Grad, Melia, 2019. Kalamazoo Michigan Photographer, Elyse Rowland.

If you were to ask me about my most memorable sessions, this one would certainly make the list! It’s the first college grad session I’ve done, and I hope it’s not the last. It was a blast walking around the WMU campus with Melia, seeing her favorite spots, and hearing about the hard work she’s put in to achieving her Masters. I just felt so lucky to be there with her and to see the pure joy on her face as we chatted and captured this BIG moment in her life.

Here are a few shots from that day, and there are so many more I didn’t share because I want them to be a surprise for her… it was crazy hard to choose a handful! :)

Enjoy!

Vicksburg Senior Photographer | Casey - Class of 2019

Since I mostly photograph families with little ones, I always do a little extra prep work & brainstorming before high school senior sessions. I never want that 'rusty' feeling to spring up in a shoot, and more than anything, my #1 concern is that my clients LOVE their final gallery. And I must say, after doing Casey's session, I think I'm ready for more seniors! It was so great chatting with him, hearing his plans, hearing about high school and getting to know him a bit better (I forgot to mention - I grew up next door to him and his sweet family!)

Casey completely rocked everything I threw his way and was up for anything. There's no better feeling as a photographer than to be given complete creative control, and then to have a model-worthy senior willing to try anything :::insert all the happy emojis here!!:::

So, if you're reading this and know an amazing high school senior who's laid back & willing to try anything or go anywhere, send them my way!! I just opened two more spots on my calendar for 2018.. last ones before it's full!

xo, Elyse

Hello & thank you for visiting my blog! I’m Elyse, the face behind Elyse Rowland Photography of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

A few of my favorite things: That warm glow you can only find at sunset. Jesus + all the grace He gives this mama of 3 wild boys. Babies, especially my own, and the way his pudgy hands reach out to me. Dappled morning sunlight and gentle summer breezes. Reading good books. Running with my red lab Waylon, and watching the sun rise over the horizon. Traveling northern Michigan, & photographing the most incredible people & places.

I currently offer both in-home documentary and outdoor lifestyle sessions, and occasionally small weddings, branding & headshot photography. I customize each & every session to my beautiful client's lives, and I'm able to give 110% of myself by only taking a small number of sessions each month.

Kalamazoo Michigan Photographer | Senior Session: Kade

Sharing a few favorite images from a senior session last summer. Kade's not only model-worthy, he has a fantastic personality too. He's charismatic, funny, and kind. I was lucky enough to do his brother's senior photos the year prior, and his mom & I always have plenty to talk about as she's a mom of all-boys as well, two of which are yet to graduate. I feel so lucky to be the photographer she chose for the guys in her life. :)

Enjoy.

Keegan // Mattawan Class of 2015 | Kalamazoo Michigan Senior Portrait Photographer

During a pre-session consultation with Keegan's mom, I found out that he's a talented saxophone and french horn player. Little details like this are so important and really help me to bring a senior's personality out in their photos. Some of my favorite images in this shoot are the ones with his sax - specifically the image of Keegan in the elevator. It was so great to break away from my typical country-setting senior session & head to Downtown Kalamazoo. This shoot absolutely lit a fire inside me to try some new things in the coming year that will  allow me to use more of my creative freedom. I'm already brainstorming, & a model-call may be coming soon!

Best wishes to you, Keegan, as you prepare to graduate in 2015. It was fantastic working with you, & I loved collaborating with you on some of these shots.

Enjoy!

Tyler | Class of 2015 | Mattawan Michigan Senior Photography

In my previous line of work at a local credit union, I worked with Tyler's sweet mom, Karen, and I was thrilled when she asked me to photograph her only son. Tyler's favorite sport is Lacrosse, so naturally we incorporated his jersey into the session. And I must say, Tyler did an amazing job choosing outfits. They fit his laid back, easy going personality while still looking timeless. During the shoot, I asked Tyler if he's been waiting his whole life for this moment - to have his senior pictures taken. : ) He grinned, and said "Well, it's real important to my mom". I absolutely loved that answer. I only hope I raise my boys to be as caring, genuine, and thoughtful as Tyler. (Well done, Karen!)

Wishing you all the best, Tyler!

Emily... it's hard to sum you up in just a few words. You're intelligent. Hysterically funny. True to yourself. Incredibly gorgeous. And you're graduating in 2015! How is that even possible?! I remember babysitting you as a tiny tot... and now we've just finished Round 1 of your Senior photos. Please know I'll always be rooting for you from the sidelines and I am *certain* an amazing future awaits you. Here are a few of my personal faves from our session. Enjoy!

FAQs (with examples!)

Just a few questions that I'm frequently asked.... thanks for reading! What should I expect from my session? You should expect a photographer who loves what she's doing, who wants nothing more than to make you look fabulous, and who will give you direction, but also watches for natural interactions that add depth to your gallery of images.

How long will the session last? Sessions usually last 45 minutes to one hour, with the exception of Senior Portrait Sessions, which tend to run longer due to an outfit change or two.

What does "Lifestyle Photography" mean? Lifestyle photography essentially tells a story. It captures you, the real you, living life as you normally would. To me, lifestyle photography is capturing those in-between-moments that happen in a blink... it might be the way your husband glances at you and smiles as you teach your daughter to fly a kite, or the way you and your spouse naturally interact while the kids are dancing around you... it's those chunky little toddler legs running along a boardwalk, or your newborn being cradled for the first time just moments after birth. Lifestyle photography is a work of art, because it freezes moments in time that you'll too-soon miss.

May I send you my Pinterest board/pins to show you my favorite shots? And will you be sure to get those shots? You are welcome to send me your Pinterest board or favorite pins, but please note: I will not specifically copy these shots. I may use your board as inspiration, or as a way of getting to know you. My photography style is much more photojournalistic, and not cookie-cutter. I want to capture you having fun, interacting, being YOU.

What's the best time of day for photos? Simply put: the "Golden Hour(s)". Basically, the hour or so just after sunrise, and the hour or so prior to sunset. The soft light photographs beautifully, and will give your photos a warm, vibrant, golden look. I realize this time of day may be tough with young children, so I'm willing to work with you on timing and planning the session around your schedule.

What happens if the weather doesn't cooperate? I promise to carefully watch the radar and will stay in close contact with you if it looks like we might get hit with a storm. I will sometimes make the final call within the last few hours prior to your session. This is Michigan after all... : )

Do you have a studio? Technically, no. But I am able to set up my natural light studio equipment in my home, and will occasionally offer this type of session in the winter. If the weather is nice enough, I would far prefer to be outside, soaking up as much sunshine as possible. Studio photography is not my passion, but it's helpful to have the equipment for just-in-case.

IMG_6482-4

Can I bring a friend along? Of course! I especially encourage this for Senior Portrait sessions. Whoever makes you feel comfortable and happy, bring them!

What kind of equipment and software do you use? I edit all of my photos in Lightroom on a PC (yes, a PC! I still have my Mac as a back-up). Some photos end up getting run through Photoshop for specific edits, but for the most part I am strictly a Lightroom gal. I built my business using a Canon Rebel T1i, and upgraded to a full frame Canon 6D in 2013. My lenses include the Canon 50mm 1.4 and Sigma 24mm 1.8.

If you could only use one lens for the rest of time, what would it be? My 50mm 1.4 without a doubt, and if money were no factor, I'd upgrade to the 1.2.

Do you only do portrait work? My goal for 2014 was to expand commercially, and so far things are looking great. I've added corporate and individual headshots to my portfolio, and I've enjoyed the experience even more than I imagined I would.
