If you hire me for an outdoor family session, be ready for some sort of small adventure! I love that I get to spend time in God's creation hiking, climbing, getting dirty (it's true, I end up laying on the ground at some point during every session!) and seeing new places with incredible families.
Here are 3 tips to make your next outdoor family session adventurous and smooth:
1. Consider your own home as a location for the session!
Children LOVE showing me where they play, their favorite hide-outs, or sitting on the back porch snuggled up to mom & dad. Plus, if you need a snack, kleenex, or a change of clothes, you don't have far to go! Not sure your house or land would work? You'd be surprised. Some families go for walks through their neighborhood during the session, others have a small line of trees in the backyard where they play, while some have acres and acres of nature. It doesn't have to be 'perfect' to be the right location, because what matters is that the session reflects your family and your current season in life.
2. Don't be afraid to have fun.
I know adults sometimes feel they'll look 'silly' if they go into imaginary land with their kids, but trust me, you don't. I'll be the first to tell you how amazing parents who PLAY are. You're showing your children just how much you love them, not just by playing, but by photographing that time together - photos that you'll display or place in a book for them to re-live the moment over and over again. Trust me, play = love. And printing that play-filled image = a love that outlasts this short time we have with them as little ones.
3. Wear clothing you can move in.
While I think it's important to consider colors, textures, and layers for your session, it's even more important that the clothing fits and moves when you move! Before the session, be sure to 'test' your outfits & shoes by walking, jogging (especially if you're a mom or dad that will be chasing littles!), and putting your arms up in the air. (And don't forget to test your shoes! Your kids won't slow down just because you're wearing high-heeled boots.)
I couldn't have asked for more from this amazing family - they inspired this post because they always make the most of every adventure with their sweet boys. Thanks Aulbach clan for allowing me to follow along and I can't wait for the next one!
