An Old Dirt Road with the Lane Family | Kalamazoo Michigan Photographer, Elyse Rowland.
When you think of dirt roads, what do you think of? For most people, it’s dusty cars. For me? The location I love most for shooting. Something about the simplicity of it. The way children are drawn to running up and down the quiet road, hair blowing in the wind, with expansive views on either side. Sticks are found for drawing names in dirt, and beautiful gleaming stones are stuffed in pockets to be added to their rock collection. It’s the simplicity, much like an open field, and the way it allows the family and their genuine connection to become the centerpiece.
I’ve been photographing this family for quite a long time, and typically twice a year. And every time, I reflect on the fact that we still manage to capture unique images with true depth each and every time. Everyone is comfortable, and it makes a difference in the way their kids interact with eachother and with me. If I can give you one piece of advice, especially if you have young children: find a photographer whose work you LOVE and who you connect with, and then stick with them. Get to know them. You’ll see the difference in your photos, promise.
And with that, here’s a sampling of the beauty that went down one gorgeous June evening on an old dirt road….
