Big Brother Kisses, the Sagehorn Family at Home. Kalamazoo Michigan Newborn Photographer, Elyse Rowland.

So much love in this sweet family of 5! As a mom of 3 boys myself, I loved getting to see big brothers loving on their new baby brother, giving kisses and snuggling up while dad read one of their favorite books, “On the Night You Were Born” by Nancy Tillman.

It’s the best feeling in the world to document these fleeting moments knowing just how much they’ll mean to this family as these boys grow into young men. The bittersweet truth is that little ones just don’t keep. So to all the mamas who take the time to schedule a session at home, plan outfits, worry over the fingerprints on the windows (trust me they don’t matter) or the toys strewn through the house (those don’t matter either), and then find peace in the chaos so that we can document real, in-the-moment life with your most precious people… you are amazing.

I’ll never take this responsibility for granted — documenting your most sacred moments. I’m so grateful each time a family chooses me and wants to be seen through my lens. So thank you, Sagehorn family, for inviting me in! Thank you to all the moms and dads who have welcomed me and my camera and given me the opportunity. <3

Something about having 3 kids has given me a different set of eyes at newborn sessions. I know the amount of work going on behind the scenes, the way mom and dad are now splitting their time, the giant emotions being felt by little ones turning into big sister or brother. It’s all tricky, but it’s all incredible. It’s holy work, raising these little people. This is why my job is so important to me… capturing the in-between and the new and the real. With these pictures, we can time travel, and feel all the feels over again.

Beau & Amanda, thank you for sharing your morning with me. Thank you for trusting me to document all the details and the in-between moments, and for just living life together while I hung out with my camera. :) You’re doing such a fantastic job with these little girls.

Xx, Elyse

She’s here! And she’s absolute perfection. Sandoval family, I’m so happy for you! Thank you for welcoming me into your home yet again. It’s been the most beautiful thing in the world — meeting you while you were pregnant with Nora, and then capturing life’s precious moments up to present day. I think the friendships I make as a photographer are one of the biggest perks of my job! So grateful <3

Baby snuggles. I can't get enough. Especially since we've decided three is the perfect number for us over here at the Rowland homestead, so we're maxed out ;) Did I just say that out loud?!

Jen & Brian have created such a beautiful home – yes, aesthetically (did you see the white on white?!), but also in the way they play, dance, snuggle up on the couch, laugh with eachother & find the humor in daily parenthood (#parentingishardsometimes!)

My hope with newborn sessions is to capture the joy, but also the REAL, and I think we did just that. No need to force smiles... just letting them be, in their own environment, their safe place. What I love about at-home sessions is the freedom. You're free to grab a snack when you're hungry, change a shirt if you get spit up on (or don't-won't bother me...), turn on a show for a toddler who's melting down (it's happened!) or head outside if the weather is nice & no one feels like being cooped up. It's flexible, comfy, and easy.

I'd love to photograph your story in your home. I have just one spot left for November & December 2018, and then it's a wrap guys! (A HUGE thanks to all of my wonderful clients – I can't wait to hug each of you this year!!) I'll be opening my 2019 schedule toward the end of the year.

Have a BEAUTIFUL summer, friends!

Hi, and thanks for visiting my blog! I’m Elyse, the face behind Elyse Rowland Photography of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

LOVES: That warm glow you can only find during sunset. Jesus + all the grace He gives this mama of 3 boys. Babies, especially my own, and the way his pudgy hands reach out to me. Morning sun dappling across a colorful quilt. Running with my red lab Waylon, and watching the sunrise. Traveling and photographing the most incredible people + places.

NOT SO MUCH: Being overly busy, clutter, and judgement.

I currently offer both in-home documentary and outdoor lifestyle sessions, as well as branding & headshot photography. I customize each & every session to my beautiful client's lives, and I'm able to give 110% of myself by only taking a small number of sessions each month.

Perfectly round baby cheeks, a sweet 'big brother' (aka: the cutest little pup named Frank), and loads of kisses & snuggles all over the house. I could've photographed this stunning little family all. day. long. They're so filled with love and joy after the birth of their newborn baby girl, and I was honored to be the one to capture some of her earliest days at home.

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." -Psalm 139:13-14

Enjoy.

A beautiful farmhouse, the cutest baby boy taking his first sink bath, and plenty of cuddles from his loving mom & dad. This session took place last winter, and I can't believe I'm just now sharing it!

Thanks, Orr Family, for letting me capture these beautiful moments for you.

Baby Girl Olivia's Grand Entrance at Bronson Hospital, Kalamazoo Michigan | Elyse Rowland Photography

There was so much goodness in the single hour I spent with this sweet family at Bronson Hospital after the birth of their baby girl, Olivia. We watched the emergency helicopter take off right as I entered the room, and little Drew's face lit up with excitement. Once baby Olivia was wrapped and in the arms of her family, she settled in and big brother Drew gave the sweetest kisses while saying "It's okay baaaaa-beeeee". He's filled with so much love for his new sister, and it's easy to see he's been taught how to love well by his amazing parents. They're what I would call 'all in' when it comes to parenting, putting their family first and using every moment to love on and teach their children. I'm blessed to be their photographer.

Enjoy.

Though Katie wasn't due for another couple of weeks (or was it 3?), sweet little William decided he was ready to make his way into the world. I'm so happy I was available when they called and was able to head to the hospital shortly after he was born. During the time I was there, we chatted about how surreal it is that just the day before he was snug as could be in the womb, and now here he was, snuggled in their arms. Completely surreal. And a huge part of the reason why I love this job... getting to see these kinds of moments & offering permanent proof of the joy.

Thank you Aulbach family for allowing me to be a part of such a special day!  I cannot wait to see how much your boys have grown at your fall session.

Enjoy!

The sweetest family of four invited me back to their home for a lifestyle newborn session earlier this summer. I'm finally getting a chance to blog this post, and it's such a joy to look back at these images. Moore family, thank you for being such amazing repeat clients and for always welcoming me in with open arms! I just love your boys and think the four of you make the perfect family unit.

A lovely baby girl was welcomed into the world on May 26th, and I was lucky enough to photograph all her newness. Miss Hollis LaRae. How gorgeous is that name?! I especially enjoyed seeing big sister Harper hug and love on her - their bond was instant, as I had no doubt it would be. Lindsay, Joe & Harper - thank you so much for inviting me in to photograph one day old Hollis! She is such a beauty and you make an amazing family unit! Very lucky to call you not only clients but also friends. (To others that are reading this - go check out Lindsay's photography - it's beautiful! Schoolcraft MI Newborn Photographer | Owen

It took me a few years to realize that I didn't have to fit the mold...that the beanbag newborn poses weren't for me, and that I didn't enjoy using backdrops or artificial lighting. Once I followed my heart and started shooting lifestyle photography my way, there was no turning back. So here I am. Shooting away in the comfort of your own home. Hanging out with amazing families & newborns, while they laugh, snuggle, kiss, jump on beds, eat snacks, and read. It doesn't get better than that. I adore the simplicity of these sessions. You don't need a room full of things to make a great shoot - you just need a little light, so this entire session was shot in an extra bedroom in their home because it had the best morning sunlight.  Owen was a dream baby, and as always I enjoyed to talking to his amazing mom & dad. We had fun chasing the littles around, and even got some shots with their Auntie who was in town from Florida.

I'm so grateful for clients who trust me to capture these incredibly important life moments. Makes my heart happy.

Enjoy!

"And now, he's wrapped around her finger

She's the center of his whole world And his heart belongs to that sweet, little, beautiful, wonderful, perfect All-American girl"

-Carrie Underwood/All-American Girl

I still remember the day Rachelle played this song for me - we were tellers working side by side at LaSalle Bank. I don't remember if she was pregnant with her first baby yet, but she loved this song at the time and I have a feeling it had to do with her excitement to start her family. She and Cody are high school sweethearts, with that super-strength sort of love for eachother. You literally look at them and think "They'll be married forever." I admire how they've raised their children (Caiden, Renna, Ryker and now baby Calla) to love eachother and put God first. So you can just imagine my excitement when she asked me to photograph their family right after Calla was born. The shadowy images you see of Rachelle snuggled on the bed with Calla really capture the emotional connection between mama and baby - exactly what I was hoping to achieve with their session.

Enjoy!

Following my Heart | Kalamazoo Michigan Newborn Photographer

A few months ago, I decided it was finally time. Time to chase the passion that burned inside my heart. For babies. For birth. For families getting to know their newest family member. I had prayed for a way to mesh two of my very favorite things: birth and photography. I clearly remember the day I first heard about Fresh48 photography – it felt like my heart gasped. The birth of my own son in 2011 was the single most wonderful, life changing experience I’ve had to date, but unfortunately it took every bit of energy in me to capture a few precious photos of his newness while we were still in the hospital. I wish so much I had hired someone to photograph us as a family, getting to know him, the instant bond… His little squished face that lasted but a few days. His tiny hands and feet, with the peeling skin left from living inside my belly.

Even as a photographer, for the birth of our next child in August, we’ve hired a Doula who also does a little Fresh48 photography as part of her package. I find this to be such a lifesaver – it will give me the ability to relax, not worry about the photos, and just focus on our first moments together as a family. And in the end, we’ll have beautiful images to remember those precious firsts.

Fresh48 photography is a great alternative to birth photography for parents who would like to freshen up before having a camera in the room. But I can promise… no matter what you look like after giving birth to that sweet new baby, you will be so glad to have those first moments documented. ♥
